4 Natural Spring Detox Remedies


April is just about over and that means that Spring is fully underway! The sun is shining, flowers are in full bloom, & nature is bursting with life. For many of us, the transition into springtime means one thing: CLEANING! Spring is the perfect time to cleanse your home, purge your closets, and even do a cleanse of your body. Too often we spend so much time cleaning our homes, closets, and even social media but we forget our own bodies.

Cleansing your body is so much more than your typical detox tea or juice cleanse. It’s about stimulating the pathways that help your body get rid of toxins and all of the junk that we are exposed to on a daily basis. There is a lot of conflicting data about whether or not we need to detox our bodies or go through a cleanse. The truth is, our bodies naturally detoxifies our system every single day. That’s what our liver is for!


Detoxing is not just drinking a special tea or only drinking green juices for a week. Detoxing involves eating, drinking, doing things that will support our liver’s natural detoxification system. Here are a few ways to jumpstart your spring detox naturally!

1. Clean Out Your Diet

This means eating a whole foods diet that is full of vitamins and minerals that are necessary for Phase 1 and 2 detoxification. Toss out the processed foods, the boxed meals, candy, etc. Processed foods are chock full of chemicals that slow down the digestive system and can make your liver work extra hard to process all of that junk. By removing the fast food and replacing it with whole foods like fruits, vegetables and lean meats, your liver can spend less time breaking down the food additives and more time using the vitamins and minerals to take care of other toxins that we are exposed to that aren’t in our foods.

2. Support Your Liver With Herbs

This is a step that I’d recommend you seeking out the help of a Naturopathic Doctor (ND), a Registered Herbalist, or even an Acupuncturist. Herbs are quite potent and should only be arranged for medicinal purposes by a trained professional. Fortunately, Mother Nature has gifted us with many herbs that can support our natural detoxification system:

●       Dandelion Root

●       Milk Thistle

●       Borututu Bark

●       Yellow Dock Root

These herbs are known to suppor liver detoxification, promote fat digestion, and aid in the elimination of toxins. These herbs would be a great addition to any detox regimen.

3. Use Natural Cleaning Supplies & Air Fresheners

We all love a clean and good smelling home but many of our favorite cleaners are filled with noxious chemicals that can put a strain on our lungs and liver. Opt for natural cleaners like cleaning-grade vinegar. If you love the lemony smell of popular cleaners then feel free to add some drops of lemon essential oil. Lavender essential oil works great and gets rid of the vinegar smell after cleaning! In addition, if you love using candles but hate releasing potentially toxic chemicals into your air then consider using incense sticks or incense cones made from natural and organic botanicals/essential oils. The incense will release a pleasant & relaxing smell without the toxins.

4. Consider Trying Castor Oil Packs

Castor oil packs are a great way to stimulate liver detoxification and the removal of toxins from the body. All you need are a few supplies:

●       A cotton washcloth

●       Organic, unrefined castor oil

●       Saran wrap

●       An old t-shirt that you don’t mind getting stained (castor oil will stain)

●       A heating pad

To start, you should either lay down on a few layers of towels or an old shower curtain (a great tip from Wellness Mama). Soak your washcloth in the castor oil and then place over your liver (just below your ribs on your right side). Wrap the oil-soaked washcloth around you with saran wrap and then place the heating pad over the saran wrap. Lie down and relax with the heated castor oil pack for 15-30 minutes. After your session is done you may find that you are tired or may have to go to the bathroom. These are good signs that your liver is working to remove the toxins from your body. Rest as much as you need to!
